School Support Staff

Everyone who works in a school has a part to play in raising standards and giving children a better start in life. If you work in a school in but are not a teacher, or you are interested in applying for a support staff role, the Support Staff webpages are for you.
Support staff are employed in a variety of functions to support teachers and pupils. What they do varies between schools. Support staff may provide administrative support, technical support (e.g. science or ICT technicians) or be involved in pastoral care, site management, midday supervision and so on. Ultimately it is a matter for individual schools how support staff are deployed.

School support staff could be employed in one of the following roles:
Teaching Assistants
Cover Supervisors
Catering Staff
Learning Support Workers
Examination Invigilators
ICT Technicians
Librarians
Sports Coaches
Bursars and Business Managers
School Office and Secretaries
Caretakers ....and more!

Supporting Teaching and Learning Qualifications and Apprenticeships for TAs

Changes made to qualifications for those in direct support of children and young people aim to make them more accessible to leaders, managers and learners. The Qualifications Credit Framework is designed to make gaining qualifications more unified. It gives ‘credit’ for learning completed and allows the individual to work at different levels – 2 or 3 – representing levels of difficulty or complexity  and for different ‘size’ achievements Award, Certificate or  Diploma  relating  to the hours studied and the number of units put together. The Department for Education website does clarify this and is worth looking at if you are considering Support Staff Training or guiding others

The award level 2 makes it possible for site staff and administration staff to engage in the training . This award is knowledge based and depends on learners gaining knowledge of issues such as Safeguarding and Communication in the School Context . A level 3 diploma offers specialist units for Cover Supervisors, Learning Mentors and Support Staff who work mainly with children and young people with Special Educational Needs

There are still apprenticeship routes, for more information on apprenticeships follow the link
